Marshmallow Test

This video was part of a research experiment done “to identify the mental processes that allowed some people to delay gratification while others simply surrendered.” It was later discovered that those who managed to be patient performed better in school and found greater success in life overall, whereas those who gave in were found to not score as well on SATs and some even tended to have behavioral issues. Experiments like this always fascinate me, especially using children, as their impulses are more authentic and honest in general and less effected by societal influences.
Are you a patient person? To be totally honest, being patient has always been a challenge for me. I don’t like to wait. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I am all about instant gratification, but at the same time, waiting for answers, waiting for results, waiting for something I want… really badly… makes me crazy. At the same time, if I knew for sure that if I wait I am going to be rewarded the incentive does make it easier.
For those of you who have children, I’d be curious to hear what happens if you were to try this test out at home. I wonder how well the results would align with their overall performance and behavior. Additionally, I wonder how different the results would be doing the same test on adults… what do you think?
