It was announced today that designer Alexander McQueen has committed suicide at the age of only 40. The fashion world is reeling at this unexpected loss, and my mind can’t seem to wrap itself around the idea that a man with such talent and a career that has steadily flourished would want to cut his own life short at the very peak.
I’m trying to find something to learn from this. I oftentimes say, “Define success.”, and those words are reverberating in my thoughts as I write this. For all the glory, the fame, the accolades… something inside of this true icon felt such a disconnect that he could no longer go on.
Please take from this, if nothing else, a reminder of just how important it is to show those you love just how much they mean to you. Pick up the phone and call that cousin you haven’t been in touch with, your grandmother, your best friend, your girlfriend or boyfriend: and take a moment to check in on them. To tell them how much they mean to you. Don’t let anyone you care for walk around with doubts and fears and sadness that festers.
The average person tells four lies per day. The most common being, “I’m fine.”
From his website:
“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”
